Early Years Foundation Stage
Our Early Years is committed to offering quality care and provision for every child. We have a strong pedagogy focusing on a play based curriculum and catering for individual children’s interests. We follow Development Matters for both planning and assessment, catering for stage related learning. The Characteristics of Effective learning underpin all we do in the Early Years. The environments, both indoors and out, support high quality learning experiences and provides the opportunities for our children to become true independent learners.
We are very fortunate to have our own Nursery which provides a seamless transition into Reception. All of the children in both Nursery and Reception use the hall facilities for PE, our fantastic computing suite and also our beautiful library.
We ensure observation and assessment is at the heart of all we do, creating plans for inspiring and meaningful learning experiences for every child based on their own fascinations and needs. We plan for provision within every area of learning, the 3 Prime Areas and the 4 Specific Areas. At Langney we work closely with parents and carers, valuing them as true partners in learning.
AREAS OF LEARNING
Within this area of learning children develop their relationships, their self-confidence and behaviours. At Langney we encourage positive relationship building and plan support for children to make friends. Adults model being a considerate and responsive partner in interactions to support children in their learning. Children at Langney are actively encouraged to try new activities and test out ideas and resources both independently and with adult support. All children have the opportunity to identify and discuss boundaries and class rules which they agree with their peers. We believe in a positive behaviour policy at Langney and this is reflected in each classroom and throughout the school with our Langney ‘Rainbow Rules’.
Communication and Language
We ensure children are exposed to a range of stories, rhymes and songs to develop their listening and attention skills. All children’s responses are valued and praised and thinking is developed by skilful questioning
by the adults in the settings. Our staff are wonderful at modelling play with the children and ‘being a thinker’ which encourages the children to discuss their ideas and thoughts in the same way. Children’s understanding is developed through planned activities based on their interests and passions. Our planning includes regularly changing small world play and role plays based on topics, books and children’s interests to stimulate acting, playing in a role and using story language in play to develop a narrative.
We have a wonderful sports hall that the children are able to use with a range of climbing and balancing equipment. The children also have access to our wooden ‘trim trail’ where they can practise, refine and demonstrate their balancing and climbing skills independently. The children are encouraged to create their own balancing courses and routes in their independent play, using a range of equipment such as crates, wooden planks and balance stones.
In the Nursery the children benefit from small group teaching of ‘Balanceability’ to use a balance bike and move onto learning how to use a pedal bike. We have a range of techniques and resources which develop fine and gross motor skills.
Children are encouraged to use mark making materials during their play, both large and small scale and refine these skills to become independent writers.
The children engage in as many opportunities as possible to share stories, songs and rhymes with adults, peers and independently. We pride ourselves on our inviting reading areas and beautiful school library to inspire our young readers. We regularly use story sacks to support retelling of familiar stories through role play. Reception children have daily taught Phonics and make accelerated progress. Nursery children work in small
In Nursery our children benefit from a rolling snack bar where they learn about a balanced diet and are exposed to different foods to try. In Reception the children eat fruit everyday and milk or water. ‘Snack time’ provides us with wonderful opportunities to talk about healthy eating. The children develop responsibilities for looking after their classroom and the resources.
groups with their key worker for their Phonics sessions. Children are encouraged to use mark making materials during their play, both large and small scale and refine these skills to become independent writers. We have a range of techniques and resources which develop fine and motor skills ready for pencil control and writing.
Our children are encouraged from an early age to play with number through the use of songs and rhymes. Within the Early Years, we ensure our children are provided with opportunities to practise their number skills independently by solving practical problems, such as sharing the play food in the restaurant between the customers and paying for goods in the shop. We link mathematics to the children’s interests, for example being robots and building helmets from the large construction then giving instructions to get somewhere using positional language.
Our passionate teachers and support staff value and celebrate each child’s uniqueness and this is evident in the wonderful learning journeys they produce. We provide a rotational key worker system throughout the Nursery in order for each child to encounter a stimulating, creative and individual learning experience tailored to their needs, which is then replicated by the class teacher and teaching assistants in Reception. ‘Each child has the right to provision which enables them to develop their personalities, talents and abilities irrespective of ethnicity, culture or religion, home language, family background, learning difficulties, disabilities or gender.’ (Development Matters, 2012).
Our Early Years settings provide stimulating, happy, learning environments, where we endeavour to make learning exciting and enjoyable.
Expressive Arts and Design
All of the classrooms have a wide range of creative materials which children can access independently during their play and also in focus sessions. Our children love to use construction and we ensure we provide a range of tools for them to explore both indoor and outdoor. Our planning includes regularly changing small world play and role plays based on topics, books and children’s interests to stimulate acting, playing in a role and using story language in play to develop a narrative.
Understanding The World
Our children come from many different backgrounds and we celebrate each and every one. We encourage parents and carers to come and speak to the children about their religions and beliefs and share stories of festivals and events they have within different cultures. Our children benefit from a wide exposure to other cultures around the world. We love to be outside and our children in both Nursery and Reception benefit from partially covered outdoor area to enjoy being outside in all weathers. We encourage the children to dig for minibeasts and explore nature! We are also able to use the Science Nature Garden on our field to further our explorations! All of the Early Years classes have a set of tablets the children are able to use to further their learning and use in groups for activities. We also all use the computing suite with our Lead Computing Teacher.
