INNOVATION IN PE

Our PE approach is based on the National Curriculum, but we seek every opportunity to innovate to make learning even more exciting, challenging and developmental in PE. As a school we invest strongly in PE. Our PE lessons are planned and taught by highly qualified, specialist teachers who ignite children’s passion for sport through their delivery of outstanding lessons. These specialist teachers bring a breadth of knowledge and enthusiasm as they engage and motivate each pupil to achieve and reach their full potential. Their expertise is passed on to our teaching and support staff through carefully planned CPD and team-teaching opportunities.

We strive to equip our children with the skills and encouragement to lead healthy lifestyles whilst promoting our Langney motto, ‘Active Body, Healthy Mind.’  To support this motto our innovative all-weather purpose-built track is open daily for the children to access as part of our drive to keep children physically fit and active. Through timetabled sessions and playtimes our pupils are encouraged to use the track as part of our unique ‘Run the World’ challenge working together as part of a team to collate miles for their class. Our newly installed outdoor gym also provides opportunities for our pupils to continue to improve their fitness levels, build muscular and cardiovascular strength.

TALENT DISCOVERY OF PUPILS IN PE

At Langney we are always searching for those pupils with an exceptional talent. As our pupils start their Langney journey from an early age we nurture and support those children excelling in a specific sport. We offer a broad and rich range of curriculum and enrichment opportunities, insisting pupils try out new activities. Our dedicated sports teachers and staff make links with the wider community, forming bonds between schools and local clubs to promote sport. Our pupils and their families are signposted to outside clubs and venues to nurture and develop their child’s talents. Links with a local prep school enables our gifted and talented pupils to take part in yearly events such as an ‘Olympic Challenge Day’ to compete against other local gifted and talented pupils.

We take part in many local sporting competitions across the county that give not only our most skilled pupils the chance to compete, but we take part in competitions that give children who are less confident the chance to shine too. This broadens their experiences and may lead to further interests and talents.

At Langney we pride ourselves for the extensive extra-curricular clubs we offer to our pupils. Using a combination of dedicated staff and external providers we are able to successfully offer 11-12 sports clubs per week for our pupils from dance to archery to football to yoga, there is a club for everyone to enjoy. It is through these clubs we can offer a more personalised approach and develop a passion for sport in a relaxed and social environment. Through these clubs we will continue to discover even more true hidden talents.

A BALANCE BETWEEN EXCELLENCE (STANDARDS) AND ENJOYMENT IN

A BALANCE BETWEEN EXCELLENCE AND ENJOYMENT IN PE

Our PE curriculum design inspires and encourages our pupils to explore their potential in a range of sports. This allows children to express themselves and learn skills in a practical environment. Teamwork, co-operation and problem solving are promoted through our carefully planned lessons. We provide a high standard of teaching for our pupils and we are dedicated to each and every child reaching their full potential. Although our PE team has high expectations we recognise the need for balance between excellence and enjoyment.

At Langney we have an internal house system that encourages children to enjoy healthy competition through intra competitions. Each house relates to a local Langney landmark as children synergise as a team with peers from all years. Our pupils use the skills they have developed during their lessons to compete against other pupils, as a team or individually. The children take pride in their house and love the challenge and enjoyment of competing against their peers.

We are committed to providing as many whole school sport events throughout the year to contribute to the love and enjoyment of sport at Langney.  These events include class marathon days, charity rowathons, bike to school days and annual sports days to name a few. There is always an electric buzz when a whole school sport event is taking place and this is evident on our pupils faces.

RAISING ASPIRATIONS & LIFE CHANCES IN  PE

At Langney careers in sport are fully highlighted and encouraged. To raise aspirations and life chances we run events and trips throughout the year to inspire and broaden children’s experiences in sport. We want our pupils to experience and recognise the opportunities available to them. Our children have experienced visiting the Amex stadium on numerous occasions and our girls’ football team have had the opportunity to train at the Brighton and Hove Albion training ground alongside the women’s football team.

Our pupils are given the opportunity to become sports leaders within the school and apply for the role of a ‘Sport Crew’ member. The successful candidates become part of a team and lead the way with developing PE and school sport. The Sports Crew are in their fifth year and have shown strong leadership skills as they help organise, manage and lead sports events. They act as great role models for their peers and motivate others to engage in sporting activities at lunch and playtimes.

We promote equality and diversity through international sports stars visiting Langney such as our VIP Invictus guest. Our pupils are truly inspired by such visits and experiences that ignites further aspirational sporting and life notions inside of them.

In recognition of our talented and aspiring pupils we invite children to be part of the ‘Swale Primary Scholar pathway within the subject of Physical Education and Sports leadership. This opportunity opens pathways to developing the sports leaders of the future by developing teamwork, planning and leading skills. We aim to open doors for pupils and provide them with the skills needed to flourish and succeed in the future of sport.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING LINKS TO

PE

HEALTH & WELLBEING IN PE

Our Pupils are positively encouraged to be physically active at every opportunity and understand the long-term benefits of exercise on physical and mental health. Our PE staff lead by example by promoting the 5 ways to wellbeing through PE. Our specialist PE teacher not only runs clubs for our pupils but each week he leads a fitness club for our staff modelling to our pupils the importance and benefits for the whole school community to be active. The school comes together every year to promote and demonstrate the act of giving as we raise much needed funds for charities by hosting our own charity sporting events such as ‘Race for Life’.  At Langney we endeavour to encourage our pupils to ‘connect’ with their family and the local community as they support each other to participate in our local ‘Beat the street’ community programme to get people of all ages active. As our pupils connect with their family they begin to ‘take notice’ of their surroundings and reflect.

By providing our pupils with an innovative curriculum and such exceptional facilities we hope this will lead to a life – long passion of being physically active that will intrinsically support their mental health.
